국가유산청(청장 허민)은 5월 27일 오전 10시 부산 벡스코에서 핵심지질유산지역(KGA, Key Geoheritage Areas, 이하 'KGA') 보전프로그램 전략 수립을 위한 'K-지질유산의 현황과 전망' 국제학술대회를 개최한다.
KGA는 지역 내 암석, 광물, 화석, 퇴적물, 토양, 지형 및 경관 등을 포함한 중요한 지질·지형 현상을 보유하고 있어 지구 역사와 생명체 진화 등에 대한 중요한 국제적 가치를 가지는 지역을 의미한다. 국가유산청과 지질분야 국제 전문가들은 지난해 10월 아부다비에서 열린 세계자연보전총회에서 각국의 중요 지질유산을 선정해 체계적으로 보전·관리하기 위해 KGA의 제도화를 주도하였고, 이 내용이 공식 의제로 채택되며 본격적인 제도 추진을 위한 국제적 기반이 마련된 바 있다.
제48차 유네스코 세계유산위원회 개최를 50여 일 앞둔 시점에서 마련된 이번 국제행사는 세계자연보전연맹(IUCN), 세계보호지역위원회 지질유산 전문가 그룹(WCPA GSG), 세계지질보존협회(ProGEO), 세계지질공원연맹(GGN), 국제지질과학연맹(IUGS) 등 국제기구와 관련학계 전문가 150여 명이 한자리에 모여, 전 세계에 소재한 KGA 잠재자원들을 관리할 국제적 플랫폼과, 본격적인 KGA 이행을 위한 보전프로그램 구축에 필요한 세부사항을 구체화하는 첫 논의의 장이다.
특히 이번 학술대회에서는 지질다양성과 지질유산 보전을 위한 새로운 국제적 약속의 의미를 담은 'KGA 한국선언'이 발표된다.
선언문에는 ▲ 지구의 역사와 생명 진화의 흔적을 담고 있는 지질유산이 인류 공동의 자산이며, 보전 대상이라는 점을 재천명하고, ▲ 기후위기 속지질유산의 보전은 국제사회의 공동 책임이며, ▲ 지질유산 보전의 국제 기준을 강화하고, KGA 프로그램의 실질적 이행과 확산을 촉진하기 위한 각국 정부와 대한민국 국가유산청의 역할을 담았다.
한국선언문의 발표는 K-지질유산의 보존·관리 현황과 글로벌 동향을 종합적으로 점검하고, KGA의 중·장기 정책 기반을 마련해 지질유산의 세계유산적 가치를 제고하는 계기가 될 것으로 기대된다.

특히, 국제적 지질학자이기도 한 허민 국가유산청장이 이번 학술대회의 좌장으로 참여하여 학술대회 전반의 논의를 이끌며 지질유산 보전에 관한 대한민국의 국제적 지도력을 발휘할 예정이다.

국가유산청은 이번 학술대회를 통해 전 세계와 연결되는 지질유산분야의 적극행정과 KGA 제도의 성공적인 추진을 위한 기반을 다져, 46억 년 지구의 기록을 온전히 간직한 세계지질유산의 지속가능한 보전을 선도해나갈 것이다.
The Korea Heritage Service (KHS; Administrator: Huh Min) will host the international symposium titled "K-Geoheritage: Current Status and Future Perspectives" on May 27 at 10:00 a.m. at BEXCO in Busan, in order to establish strategic directions for the conservation programme of Key Geoheritage Areas (KGA).
KGA refers to areas possessing significant geological and geomorphological features—including rocks, minerals, fossils, sediments, soils, landforms, and landscapes—that hold important international value for understanding Earth's history and the evolution of life. In October last year, at the IUCN World Conservation Congress held in Abu Dhabi, the KHS and an international group of geological experts led discussions on institutionalizing the KGA initiative to systematically identify, conserve, and manage important geoheritage sites around the world. The proposal was subsequently adopted as an official agenda item, laying the international foundation for the full-scale advancement of the KGA system.
Taking place approximately 50 days ahead of the 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, this international symposium will bring together approximately 150 experts from international organizations and academia, including the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the IUCN WCPA Geoheritage Specialist Group (WCPA GSG), the International Association for the Conservation of Geological Heritage (ProGEO), and the Global Geoparks Network (GGN) and International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS). The symposium will serve as the first international forum to discuss in detail the establishment of a global platform for managing potential KGA resources worldwide and the key elements required for the implementation of a full-scale KGA conservation programme.
In particular, the symposium will feature the announcement of the "KGA Korea Declaration," which embodies a new international commitment to geodiversity and geoheritage conservation.
The declaration reaffirms that geoheritage, preserving the history of the Earth and the traces of the evolution of life, constitutes a shared heritage of humankind and must be conserved for future generations. It further emphasizes that geoheritage conservation amid the climate crisis is a shared responsibility of the international community, while outlining the roles of national governments and the KHS in strengthening international standards for geoheritage conservation and promoting the effective implementation and expansion of the KGA programme.
The announcement of the Declaration is expected to provide an opportunity to comprehensively review the current status of conservation and management of K-Geoheritage alongside global trends, while also establishing a mid- to long-term policy foundation for the KGA initiative and enhancing the value of geoheritage.
The symposium programme will consist of thirteen presentations and in-depth discussions among internationally renowned scholars and experts. Topics will include global geoheritage conservation and the justification for KGA (Kyung Sik Woo, Chair of the WCPA GSG); KGA and UNESCO designations (Sophie Justice, Director of Chablais UNESCO Global Geopark); IUCN programmes and KGA (Robbert Casier, World Heritage Programme Development Officer, IUCN); geoconservation at the IUCN (Manu Monge-Ganuzas, Vice President, ProGEO); the IUCN KGA initiative and its main guidelines and procedures (José Brilha, Former President, ProGEO); UNESCO Global Geoparks as a global network for conserving and managing geological heritage (Ilias Valiakos, Coordinator of the European Geoparks Network); the history of planet Earth and the evolution of life (Kevin Page, President, ProGEO, and Editor-in-Chief, Geoheritage); tectonic systems (Maria da Gloria-Garcia, Professor, University of São Paulo); erosional systems (Piotr Migoń, Professor, University of Wrocław); volcanic systems (Dan Tormey, UNESCO World Heritage Evaluator); soils as geoheritage (Melinda McHenry, UNESCO World Heritage Expert); KGA's next steps (José Brilha); and potential KGAs in Korea (Kyung Sik Woo). Following the presentations, panel discussions will be held with participating experts and speakers from each field.
In particular, Huh Min, Administrator of the KHS and an internationally recognized geologist, will serve as chair of the symposium and lead discussions throughout the event, demonstrating the Republic of Korea's international leadership in geoheritage conservation.
